Big Sky March 17-24th 2007

Our trip started out on a great Saturday morning. St. Patty’s day 2007. Joanne the trip leader handed out shamrock cookies to all fliers on the trip. Everyone was on time including the airline. We connected through Atlanta and joined up with other groups from Boca Raton and Miami. Again this flight left on time and arrived on time into Bozeman airport.

Here is where the fun began…. Our new bus waited outside for us. We all quickly located our luggage and boarded the bus. The driver stopped at a local grocery store, allowing us to buy our necessary goodies. We all quickly returned to the bus and began the trip toward Big Sky. About 15 mins into the trip the bus pulled off the road. The driver told me the bus was overheating, and she decided to sit for a few minutes allowing the engine to cool some. She then proceeded up the road a short distance to a parking lot in a strip plaza. Most every one debussed and started milling around the quaint shops. With in 30 mins another bus came along transferred all our baggage and we were off again!

A beautiful bus ride past trout filled streams, took us quickly up the mountainside.

With the early time change this year, we had plenty of late afternoon sun to enjoy the huge mountain vistas. In fact it was odd to see the sun so high with slopes vacant of skiers. We soon passed a quaint shopping village, and on to the Huntley Lodge.

On Sunday everyone enjoyed the much touted Huntley buffet breakfast, and then off to the slopes. We were not disappointed in the near perfect spring skiing conditions. The huge Lone Mountain Peak offers trails for skiers of all levels. Perfect for our group, which had skiers in all levels. During the week we were blessed with two days of fresh overnight power. Some of our group ventured over to a new part of the Big Sky area called Moonlight Basin. This area contains lots of expert trails, including one trail named

“Don’t Tell Momma”. Every one who skied there raved about the great conditions there too.

The week was filled with Florida Ski Council activities. These included après ski, dinner parties, ski race, Crazy hats and boxer shorts day. In fact Rick Weinberg who traveled with our club was the fastest male skier overall in the race. Thanks Rich!!
