Breckenridge Trip Report ‘07

By Tom Peterson

The Clearwater-St. Petersburg Snow Sharks left Tampa Int’l Airport on December 30th, not knowing if we would be able to get to Breckenridge as Denver had been socked with a huge snowstorm the week before our trip and then again on the 28th. However, amazingly enough, when we arrived in Denver, the sun was shining, the roads were pretty clear, and our bus was on time. We happily headed up to Breckenridge (after a stop at Applejack’s liquor store-the biggest one I’ve ever seen!), and enjoyed watching scenery and movies in our beautiful high tech bus!

After settling in at the Riverbend condos, we had a wine and cheese welcome party with the mountain rep who came with gifts for everyone. We were able to get to know each other and the mountain, which helped facilitate the wonderful week we had at Breck. We were all very busy: some in played in the snow, made snow angels and snowmen, and rode snow mobiles, while others hit the stores and slopes of Breckenridge for a week full of skiing, shopping, eating, more skiing, more shopping, and more eating. Some also luxuriated in the heated Jacuzzi (indoors and out). Some even went on a horse drawn sleigh to dinner in the woods! We all ended the week with an informal happy hour where we finished off our Applejack supplies and then went to Casa Mia for our club dinner!

Breckenridge was a wonderful destination for our holiday trip. The New Year’s Eve celebration was impressive with fireworks at 10 PM (or midnight Florida time) and a torch parade down the mountain with over 100 skiers. The skiing was excellent--with varied terrain on 4 peaks, beautiful blue skis and short lift lines. In addition, Breck has many fine restaurants, great shops of all kinds—which are easily accessible—and visitors from all over the world. A splendid time was had by all. Sheryl Peterson did a great job as trip leader and all were very appreciative of what she did for the group.
