Winter Park lodging is at its best at the Zephyr Mountain Lodge. Situated at the base of the Winter Park Ski Resort just steps from the lifts, the Zephyr Mountain Lodge is the only luxury, ski in/ski out lodging in Winter Park. The Zephyr boasts convenient slope side accommodations, four outdoor hot tubs, a state-of-the-art fitness room, and secure, heated underground parking. And with shops, restaurants, pubs and other amenities on the ground floor, everything you need is conveniently located just moments away.
More than $6.5 million in capital was invested into Winter Park resort last summer. One of the most anticipated improvements included a complete transformation of West Portal Station. Inside, you will find dramatic new décor, new menus, and a very contemporary, expanded Rail Yard Terrain park with the construction of a Superpipe and larger than life jumps. Additionally, they have built an intermediate terrain park with a mini-halfpipe on Jack Kendrick, and a first time ever terrain garden in Discovery Park. And for all you racers on Cranmer, be sure to check out the new snow bridge across Crammer Cutoff to improve traffic flow.
The Zephyr Mountain Lodge and the Winter Park Ski Resort are also both conveniently located - set in the Vasquez Mountains of Arapaho National Forest on the western slopes of the Continental Divide, it’s only 67 miles from Denver and 90 miles from the Denver International airport. This is closer to Denver than any other major Colorado resort. It is easily accessible by car, bus, and the Ski Train.

The Mountain:
Winter Park is the third largest ski area in Colorado with 2,762 acres, 134 trails, 22 lifts and 5 interconnected mountains with bottom to top high speed express lifts.
One of the best aspects of the mountain is the variety! Mary Jane Mountain has the best mogul skiing in the USA and Vasquez Cirque has the most extreme terrain in Colorado. The beginner terrain of the mountain includes Discovery Park, which has been rated as one of the top five places to learn to ski in America. 35% of the mountain is intermediate and provides plenty of wide groomed cruisers for the intermediate skiers at Winter Park Resort.
5 Big Mountains:
Winter Park Mountain
When Winter Park Mountain first opened in 1940, guests paid $1 for a 1/2 mile rope tow and a handful of runs. Since then, Winter Park Mountain, the heart and soul of the resort, has been a haven for family skiing with its beautifully-groomed cruiser runs, terrain parks, halfpipe and a host of popular learn-to-ski programs including Groswold's Discovery Park, a $2-million, 20-acre learn-to-ski or ride area. |

|
Mary Jane Mountain
Mary Jane, a legendary social figure among the early railroaders and miners who settled in the Fraser Valley, acquired the land at the base of the mountain in the late 1800's. Mary Jane Mountain first opened to skiers in 1976, and this once closely-guarded local's secret has developed a worldwide reputation for having some of the best bump skiing in North America. In fact, this year Snow Country magazine named Mary Jane one of the Top 5 Resorts in North America for Bump Skiing. Long, unrelenting mogul runs and steep, technical chutes highlight this paradise of advanced terrain. Just one date with Mary Jane and you'll see why a favorite saying among locals is "No Pain, No Jane." |
Vasquez Ridge
Named after a French fur trapper who worked this mountain in the 1800's, Vasquez Ridge, Winter Park's third mountain, opened in 1986 is a favorite for many because of its beautiful vistas, great sunny afternoons and powder stashes that tend to last long into the day. Being further off the beaten path, and serviced by the Pioneer Express high speed quad lift, guests love the wide-open runs like "Stagecoach" and "Sundance" and the short challenging bump runs like "Gambler" and "Aces & Eights". |
|
|
|
Parsenn Bowl
A wide-open, high-alpine bowl that first opened in 1992. Parsenn Bowl is a favorite attraction at Winter Park Resort and the site of the ski and snowboard camps that last well into June. With a top elevation of 12,060', you really get to experience high-altitude skiing at its best. The views are just about perfect and the terrain is ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders. Hint: Parsenn Bowl is nirvana on a powder day. |
Vasquez Cirque
The Cirque markes the largest terrain opening in the history of Winter Park Resort and is sure to be an instant hit with the extreme crowd. 435 acres of prime, off-piste terrain that features a mix of cornices, rock outcroppings, steeps and glades. Note: this is for the extreme backcountry adventurer-conditions are vastly different from other parts of the mountain. Ski, board or telemark within your ability. |
|
Over the last ten years Winter Park has recorded an average annual snowfall of over 359 inches and has the most consistent snow in Colorado season after season.
When it comes to terrain and rails, Winter park has plenty to offer. 2,762 total skiable acreas. 134 designated trails and 1,467 acres of off-piste terrain, including Vasquez Cirque and glade skiing.

Winter Park Resort has 21 lifts including 8 High-Speed Express Quads, 3 Triple Chairlifts, 7 Double Chairlifts, 2 Magic Carpets and 1 Rope Tow. Uphill capacity of 33,510 skiers per hour. The Zephyr Express is modified to accommodate 20 gondola cabins for dinner service to The Lodge at Sunspot.

Don't ski? Don't worry. You can learn to ski right on site. Winter Park Resort offers their Guest-Centered Teaching™ System which focuses on what you want to learn. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner in Discovery Park or someone ready to jump to the next level, you will be amazed at your progress. |
| Winter Park Mountain is home to the National Sports Center for the Disabled. NSCD began in 1970 as a one-time ski lesson for children with amputations for the Children's Hospital of Denver. Today, the NSCD is one of the largest outdoor therapeutic recreation agencies in the world. Each year, thousands of children and adults with disabilities take to the ski slopes, mountain trails and golf courses to learn more about sports - and themselves. With specially trained staff and its own adaptive equipment lab, the NSCD teaches a variety of winter and summer sports and activities to individuals with almost any physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral diagnosis. The mission of the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) is to provide quality outdoor sports and therapeutic recreation programs that positively impact the lives of people with physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral challenges. |

Area Description
The Towns of Winter Park and Fraser, located in Grand County, Colorado, are situated in a high mountain park at elevations of 9,000 ft. and 8,800 ft. respectively. The valley is surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest and three Wilderness areas: Indian Peaks, Byers Peak and Vasquez. Approximately 75% of the land in Grand County is publicly owned. 17,000 acres of public land is owned by the City of Denver Water Board. Nearby Rocky Mountain National Park sets aside 265,727 acres of natural land and wildlife habitat for the public to enjoy.
Tourism is the main source of industry in eastern Grand County (referred to as the Fraser Valley), while ranching and agriculture are the primary industry in western Grand County. The population of Grand County is approximately 12,000 in the whole county, and is dispersed through the rural areas and its six incorporated towns. Primary access to the Fraser Valley is via Highway 40 over Berthoud Pass, which reaches an elevation of 11,315 ft.
The Town of Winter Park (pop. 720) is 7.5 square miles, including the base village of Winter Park Resort. The town and ski area have long been popular with Denver Metro residents, though the region is quickly becoming a four-season vacation destination. Fraser (pop. 732) is 6 square miles and is the more service-oriented of the two towns, with a grocery store, elementary school, library, town hall and drug store. Both towns are characteristic of season resort towns. The Fraser Valley is only 90 minutes northwest of Denver, 90 minutes from Summit County and two hours from the Vail Valley.
History
The Fraser Valley is rich in heritage, ranging from the Ute Indians, logging and pioneers, to mining, ranching and the railroad. The area was inhabited by both the Ute and Arapaho Indian Tribes and was discovered by pioneers around 1820. The first settlers arrived around 1850, and the first post office was established in Fraser in 1876, which is now Cozen’s Ranch Museum.
David Moffat pioneered the building of a transcontinental railroad line from Denver to the West Coast. Tracks over the top of Rollins Pass were completed in 1905 and used steadily until 1928 when the 6.2 mile Moffat Tunnel was opened. The railroad provided the impetus for another industry in Grand County, logging. While the railroad was pushing west there was a tremendous need for timber. The logging industry flourished in the early 20th Century, helping provide valuable raw materials to Denver, a booming city on the border of the Western frontier. Although the first ski hills in Grand County were built in Hot Sulphur Springs in 1911, the railroad helped the ski industry flourish, especially Winter Park Ski Area, which opened in 1940. Today, the Ski Train still operates most weekends throughout the winter, providing guests a historic, unique way to come enjoy the mountains.
Climate & Ecology
Three ecological zones exist in the Fraser Valley: Montane, Sub-Alpine and Alpine. Their characteristics include sagebrush, willows, aspen, and lodgepole pine at lower elevations; mosses, lichens and pines above tree-line. Because of our high altitude and cold temperatures, winter tends to be long, but these characteristics give us some of the best powder skiing in the United States! Their is some wonderful wildlife as neighbors, including elk, moose, deer, raccoons and porcupines.
